I usually don't allow my dog in the kitchen because I try to keep him in the habit of not eating table scraps, which he tends to beg for.

For various reasons, we are actually unable to close our kitchen door. As a result, we were never able to keep our dogs out of the kitchen! They would always just sit or lie on the floor though. They never tried to get onto the table or any of the surfaces. One of them would occasionally raid the bin but that was all.

I know I should be stricter about my chow being in the kitchen since it could be dangerous to her if she spills something hot. Our family started out strict but I had been giving her treats whenever I was in the kitchen and she became quite bold about investigating what's on the counter. When that started to happen I began to set boundaries again.

My dog is allowed in the kitchen. Although we have a small, galley-style kitchen so if we're trying to cook, there's really no room for him. We usually have to make him go lay down in the other room. Of ocurse, he thinks if we tell him to do this that means we're going to bring him some of the food we're making.
