Heartworm preventatives are extremely important because mosquitoes biting your dog can sometimes cause heartworms. Heartworms are very deadly if not treated and it's not the easiest treatment, for your dog or your wallet. It can be quite expensive to treat so it's also much cheaper to give your dog heartworm preventatives.

If you have a dog, what heartworm preventative do you use? Which are the least expensive heartworm preventatives? Are you able to get a better deal somewhere online than at your vets?

Our vet usually suggests the initial shot for heart worm preventative in puppies. After that, we can start with the chewables. I've used Heartguard once for Peanuts but never again.

It's definitely cheaper to buy it an agricultural store or online. The vets tend to charge more expensively for it.

Thankfully we don't have a problem with heartworm in my area. However, I still give Misha Interceptor each month which prevents a few different things. We get critters in our neighborhood. Raccoons especially can spread things through their scat.

My previous dog was on Heartguard. But, my veterinarian switched from the tablets to the chewables. For some reason, the chewable form made her throw up. Since there really isn't a heartworm problem in my area, the veterinarian told me not to worry about it unless we were to take her on vacation somewhere where it was more likely she'd be exposed to it.

I actually don't even know what kind we use at the moment. We always get it from the vet and I don't pay much attention to it, to be honest. It's not -that- expensive and well worth it to me.
