Do you have these in your area? There is one in Northern California that makes the news each year.

People bring their ugliest dog to be judged for it's ugliness. Some are so ugly, you just have to feel sorry for them. It appears Chinese Crested are the most common competitors.

The ugliness isn't based on breed. These dogs have crooked teeth, hanging tongues, hair growing in odd places.

    Here's some info. on it:
    http://www.examiner.com/article/world-ugliest-dog-competition

This is Creature who is from Utah and has come to compete:

This dog came all the way from Great Britain to compete:

What do you think of these contests? Are they mean spirited or in good fun? I think they show that even the ugliest dog is loved.

Nope they aren't. Actually, these contests may sound like an insult but the way their owners treat them just shows how humans can also love pass the physical appearance of a being. Although others do select the ugliest from the littler simply to enter this contest, what's important is the dogs don't feel that way. And it also makes people aware that there are this types of dogs and that they're not abominations or genetic monsters.

And besides, it's a bit obvious that these guys are pampered. One thing I've learned in these contests is that hairless dogs need their sunscreen.:)

I've heard about a few of these competitions over the years and strangely I often find the winners adorable. Many of them are Chinese Crested a breed I've always liked. Just because a dog looks different doesn't make it ugly. I think it's sad that an owner would enter their dog in such a competition.:( After all it's a dogs owner who matters most .. they of all people should find their dogs adorable.

I don't think it's demeaning either. The dogs don't know they are ugly. I have heard that some of those in the contest were dogs surrendered to shelters. Evidently, there are some people who do not want to be seen with an ugly dog.

Tajnz, I think the owners do find them adorable and lovable. In some ways, it brings awareness that dogs don't have to look like a purebred to be good pets.

I read somewhere that the dogs with the tongues hanging out of their mouth have a problem with the structure of their mouth. It is not shaped right or large enough so the tongue can't sit properly.

I have to admit that I have a soft spot for these dogs. They are so ugly they are cute. I'm glad they have found people who love them.

I find it all very sad that the owners for what ever reason put their doggy friends into this type of competition. It is wonderful people can adopt or own dogs which to us are ugly but to go to a competitive level is something the owners need not do.

I think it's all in good fun. The dogs have no idea that they're being called "ugly," of course, and their owners obviously love them very, very much. They're just poking some fun. :)

Just read one of the articles about one of the top contenders for the title. Apparently the owners do not really think that their dog is in the least ugly. So, generally speaking, I would say the contest is a good thing in promoting the idea that an ugly-looking dog can still make a lovable pet.

I agree that it is in good fun. I think all the dogs are well loved. It reminds me a family I knew growing up. The father went to the shelter and got the scrappiest dog you ever met. It was a mix of a mix of a mix. LOL It was so homely it was cute.

Dogs are endearing in different ways. I am sure there are people who get pedigrees because they think that reflects well on them. But, an ugly dog is just as lovable.

Here are the results of the contest. http://www.sonoma-marinfair.org/worlds-ugliest-dog Mugly from Great Britain won the contest. If you look at the photo, you can see why. I don't think the outfit really helps matters :D

How come the Chinese Cresteds seem to be favorites? Is it something to do with their straggly hair? Or their lolling tongues? How come pugs can't put up a strong challenge?

Victor, I think it might be the combination of all of that. It may have to do with being hairless except for the patches on the head. They look like they've been in a bad accident rather than being born that way.

I looked up Chinese Crested's and was surprise to find how different they can look. There is a long haired variety that does have hair all over their body. Even the "furless" in these photos are quite nice looking.

The Pug has that kind of ugly cute look, don't you think? Maybe the fur makes a difference. It still seems cuddly even with the Marty Feldman eyes.

A friend of ours has a dog that was very cute as a puppy. It's a mix between a Chihuahua and a Beagle. We though it would be a small dog. It turned out to be about 40 lbs. The poor thing is really ugly. None of the Chihuahua or Beagle came out. The dog is a tannish yellow with a brown face and pale brown eyes. It's really a strange combination. I would say it looks more like a mix of a dog and hyena. LOL I would have never known it was the same dog as the puppy they showed us two years ago.

Do you think this old man might have something to do with the judges' choice?

There's a bit of resemblance there, isn't it?
