When you are adopting a dog, what do you prefer, puppies or adult dogs? Breeds or mutts? What determines for you whether or not you have a "love connection" with the dog that you are considering?

If I had the choice I'd adopt a bulldog puppy :D But in general I'd say the breed of a dog isn't that important for me, I adopted a schnauzer some years ago, even tho that wasn't my dream dog. He was an adult... a senior when I adopted him, so age isn't an issue for me either :)

Our recent dog was adopted (used to be a stray puppy). So, I would say we prefer a puppy to nearly adult dog since no need for the mother's milk. :p

I prefer adopting a puppy. Puppies are so adorable! And it's much easier to train them. I've always felt that adopting adult dogs is a rewarding experience, but it's also difficult, because they already have their habits.

I prefer adopting puppies. That way I am more attuned with their needs as well as quirks. I've also never gotten a full grown dog before so I would not know how to begin bonding with it. I would be very cautious around it and that might hinder the bonding process. Maybe if I had more experience and knowledge with dog behavior I would not mind adopting an adult dog.

I completely agree. I don't have much experience with dogs either. This is one of the reasons why I prefer to adopt puppies.
Adopting adult dogs is a little risky, I think. My mother once received an adult cocker spaniel as a gift. That dog was crazy! He was extremely aggressive and used to bite everybody, the whole family was scared of him.
